How Keto and Intermittent Fasting Changed My Health After 40

Quick Summary

  • PCOS, chronic fatigue, acne, and digestive struggles for years
  • Discovered the connection between insulin and metabolic health
  • Keto and intermittent fasting became a turning point
  • Improved energy, digestion, weight stability, and overall wellness
  • Sustainable healthy lifestyle in her 40s
  • Now helping other women achieve similar transformations

For years, I struggled with PCOS, chronic fatigue, weight fluctuations, digestive issues, and recurring infections. Even after sleeping 10 hours a night, I still woke up exhausted and drained.

Like many women, I believed I simply needed more willpower, less food, and more exercise. But despite trying different diets, medications, and health approaches, I never felt truly healthy.

Everything changed when I discovered the connection between insulin, nutrition, keto, and intermittent fasting.

Today, in my 40s, I feel healthier, stronger, and more energetic than I did in my 20s. I want to share my keto transformation story in the hope that it may encourage other women who feel frustrated, exhausted, or stuck in their own health journey.

My Early Struggles With Sugar and PCOS

For as long as I can remember, I craved sugar. As a child and teenager, sweets were a constant part of my life. Peanut butter by the spoonful, jam straight from the jar, candy bars for lunch, and daily McFlurries during the summer all felt normal to me at the time.

But behind those cravings, my health was quietly deteriorating.

Since my teenage years, my menstrual cycles were never regular. Eventually, I learned that I had developed PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome). I also struggled with severe cystic acne throughout my teens and early adulthood. Some cysts became so inflamed they required cortisone injections from a dermatologist.

I tried countless topical creams, medications, and treatments, including Accutane, but nothing truly resolved the underlying issues.

Living With Chronic Fatigue and Weight Fluctuations

In my 20s, I often felt like I was living in the body of an elderly person. Despite sleeping long hours every night, I constantly felt exhausted. I needed afternoon naps just to function.

Eventually, I was referred to a sleep clinic and prescribed a CPAP machine. While it improved my sleep quality somewhat, I still never felt truly energized.

At the same time, I struggled with weight fluctuations for years. I wasn’t severely overweight, but I constantly cycled between gaining and losing the same 15 pounds.

  • Restrict calories
  • Lose weight temporarily
  • Regain the weight
  • Repeat the cycle again

Like many people at the time, I also believed the low-fat dietary advice that dominated mainstream nutrition messaging. Looking back, I now realize I spent years trapped in a cycle of yo-yo dieting and unstable blood sugar.

Digestive Issues and Recurrent Infections

On top of everything else, I suffered from recurring sinus and lung infections several times per year, often requiring antibiotics.

Over time, frequent antibiotic use contributed to major digestive problems including:

  • bloating
  • constipation
  • food intolerances
  • discomfort after eating

At one point, my digestive symptoms became impossible to ignore.

The Turning Point: Understanding Nutrition and Insulin

In my mid-30s, I started exercising regularly and began researching health and nutrition more seriously. While exercise helped somewhat, many of my symptoms persisted.

Eventually, I worked with a naturopathic doctor who specialized in nutritional biochemistry. He recommended an elimination diet to identify potential food sensitivities.

That experience became my first major breakthrough.

After eliminating problematic foods and slowly reintroducing them over several months, many of my digestive symptoms dramatically improved. For the first time, I realized how deeply nutrition was affecting my overall health.

Around that same time, my husband introduced me to the book The Thinsulin Program by Charles Nguyen. The book focused heavily on insulin regulation and blood sugar stability.

This became another major turning point for me.

The more I researched insulin resistance, blood sugar, and metabolic health, the more I began to suspect that insulin dysregulation was contributing to many of my struggles — including PCOS, energy crashes, cravings, and weight fluctuations.

Discovering Keto and Intermittent Fasting

Eventually, my research led me to keto and intermittent fasting.

What immediately stood out to me was that the approach finally made logical sense. Instead of constantly fighting hunger and relying on calorie restriction alone, the focus shifted toward stabilizing blood sugar, improving satiety, and supporting metabolic health.

Within just two weeks of starting keto, I noticed dramatic changes:

  • improved energy
  • better sleep
  • reduced cravings
  • more stable mood
  • gradual fat loss without extreme restriction

For the first 10 weeks, I lost approximately one pound per week naturally and consistently.

After seeing my results, my husband decided to join me. He had already experienced significant weight loss previously, but keto helped him continue improving his health and lose additional weight as well.

A Game-Changer

For the first time in my life, I was finally able to maintain a stable weight without constantly dieting or obsessing over calories.

More importantly, the improvements went far beyond weight loss.

After adopting a healthy keto lifestyle:

  • my recurring lung and sinus infections stopped
  • my digestive symptoms improved significantly
  • my energy levels became more stable
  • I no longer needed medications for acne and PCOS
  • my relationship with food completely changed

My health transformation over the years through keto, intermittent fasting, strength training, and sustainable lifestyle changes.

Hormonal Improvements

Around the same period, I also stopped taking birth control pills because I wanted to see whether my body could regulate naturally on its own.

Through a combination of keto, lifestyle improvements, and seed cycling, my cycles finally became regular for the first time in my life.

What My Lifestyle Looks Like Today

Today, my healthy lifestyle is built around several foundational habits:

  • healthy keto nutrition
  • intermittent fasting
  • stress management
  • strength training
  • movement and exercise
  • quality sleep

I continue to enjoy weight training and Pilates, both of which have helped me feel physically and mentally stronger.

I also believe exercise plays an important role in emotional well-being and stress reduction — not just physical appearance.

Feeling Better in My 40s Than My 20s

Now in my 40s, I genuinely feel healthier, stronger, and more confident than I did in my 20s.

My goal is not perfection. It’s sustainability, balance, and long-term health.

I share my story because I know many women feel frustrated when they are doing “everything right” yet still struggle with fatigue, cravings, stubborn weight, poor sleep, or hormonal symptoms.

Sometimes the missing piece is understanding how nutrition, insulin, stress, and lifestyle habits work together.

Frequently Asked Questions About Keto, Fasting, and Women’s Health After 40

Many women find that reducing sugar and stabilizing blood sugar through a healthy keto lifestyle may help support hormonal balance, energy levels, cravings, and weight management. Every person is different, but improving metabolic health can make a significant difference for some women with PCOS.
Intermittent fasting can be a helpful tool for many women when approached gradually and strategically. Factors like stress, sleep, hormones, and overall health should always be considered. A balanced and sustainable approach is usually more effective than aggressive fasting.
Some improvements happened within just a few weeks, especially energy and cravings. Other changes developed gradually over time through consistency, lifestyle changes, exercise, stress reduction, and long-term habits.
Yes. One of the biggest changes I personally experienced was more stable energy throughout the day. Before keto, I often felt exhausted even after long nights of sleep.
Many people naturally become more satisfied eating nutrient-dense foods with adequate protein and healthy fats. While calories still matter, improving food quality, satiety, and blood sugar stability can often make healthy eating feel much more sustainable.
For me, it includes whole foods, healthy fats, protein, low-sugar meals, intermittent fasting, exercise, stress management, and consistent sleep habits. The goal is long-term health and sustainability — not perfection.
